"If a child is poor in maths but good in tennis, most people would hire a maths tutor. I would rather hire a tennis coach."
Through structured training programmes and mentorship, the Township Tennis project aims to develop not only tennis skills, but also teamwork and resilience.
By fostering a love for tennis and providing a supportive environment, the project aims to empower the youth, build community connections, and create opportunities for personal growth and development.
The project is the brainchild of Open Active creator JB Marais, who seeks to make tennis accessible to everyone in South Africa through the Open Tennis Foundation.
The Foundation for a Sustainable Future shares the objectives of the Open Tennis Foundation and supports the Township Tennis project in its efforts to provide access to tennis facilities, coaching and equipment for young players who otherwise may not have had the opportunity to participate in this sport.
The Township Tennis project operates on the belief that sports can serve as a powerful vehicle for social change, transcending barriers of socioeconomic status and fostering inclusivity. By instilling values of respect, sportsmanship, and perseverance, the project not only aims to produce skilled athletes but also responsible citizens who contribute positively to their communities.
Through collaborations with local schools, community centers, and sports organizations, the Township Tennis project seeks to create a sustainable network of support for aspiring young players.
