''Everything will be fine as long as you don’t give up. It will be hard in the beginning, but don’t stop.''

Gordon Moore, co-founder of Intel and creator of Moore’s Law

In 1965, Gordon Moore predicted remarkable strides in technology, accompanied by a simultaneous reduction in manufacturing costs. Today, we are fortunate to have an abundance of technology at our disposal, at affordable prices.

Contemplate Wild is a non-profit organisation that utilises technology to safeguard endangered species and habitats. They assist large conservation areas by integrating real-time tracking and other sensor data, and converting it into actionable information.

Technology, however, can never fully replace the importance of boots on the ground. To ensure the safety of rangers, Contemplate Wild introduced a project that employs cost-effective and reliable tracking devices to provide accurate, real-time GPS locations. Each tracking device is also equipped with an integrated panic button for emergency assistance.

To date, 66 devices have been deployed effectively across four sections of the Kruger National Park. Over the next two months, another 160 devices will be deployed covering eight more sections.

The Foundation for a Sustainable Future supports this project through grants from corporate donors that will help to maintain the tracking devices for the next two years. Further support is required for maintenance and other operational costs such as server costs, data analysis and network coverage.
