K9 Project Watchdog is an initiative of the SANParks Honorary Rangers – a registered non-profit and public benefit organisation comprising volunteers who give freely of their time and skills to support conservation in South Africa’s national parks.
Referred to as a “game changer” in the war against poaching, the K9 anti-poaching unit is proving to be one of the most effective deterrents against rhino and other wildlife poaching in the Kruger National Park, Table Mountain National Park and six other national parks in South Africa.
In 2012, the first three dogs were placed in the Kruger National Park and the first K9-tracking teams were formed. Today, K9 Project Watchdog has eight K9-centres, as well as 62 dogs and their handlers who are responsible for approximately 95% of arrests of poachers in our national parks.
As a non-profit organisation, SANParks Honorary Rangers relies on donations to maintain their K9 anti-poaching units. To this end, the Foundation for a Sustainable Future supports K9 Project Watchdog through the procurement of dogs, sponsoring of handlers and covering some of the operational costs.
